Leading telecommunications company, MTN Nigeria has expanded the coverage of its WiMAX driven revolutionary Internet service, MTN HyNet, to the cities of Abuja and Port Harcourt. This is to further boost internet penetration in the two cities. The service, which was first introduced in Lagos in 2009 by MTN Business, the business-to-business division of MTN Nigeria, was subsequently extended to other cities such as Warri, Ilorin, Osogbo, Kaduna, Sokoto, Makurdi and Bauchi in 2010.
MTN HyNet is a prepaid high speed internet service which combines the speed and reliability of a fixed broadband Internet with the convenience and flexibility of a mobile Internet service. The service guarantees download speed 16 times faster than a telephone line.
Speaking at the official launch in Abuja, Mr. Babatunde Osho, Chief Enterprise Solutions Officer, MTN Nigeria, represented by Mr. Ladipo Nylander, General Manager, Enterprise Marketing, stated, We noticed that quite a number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as well as small office home office (SOHO) in the Federal Capital Territory were missing out on this unique service, which is capable of boosting their bottom-line. And at MTN Business we believe that a critical success factor for businesses in the 21st century is access to fast and reliable internet.
According to him, MTN HyNet offers multi-user functionality without the need for wires. With the inbuilt Wi-Fi capability of this service, staff of an organisation can access the Internet wirelessly within a 50-metre radius, he said, adding that home and office subscribers can enjoy and share the Internet without limitation to the amount of data they can download. He said subscribers can choose from a variety of flexible payment plans/packages or according to their required download speeds.
MTN HyNet runs on our dedicated WiMax network which is independent of our GSM network; and this WiMax network will be heavily boosted by the West African Cable Systems (WACS) which only recently went live here in Nigeria, said Osho.
In a similar launch event held at the Le Meridien Hotel, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, Mr. Mohammed Aliyu, Senior Manager, Corporate Account Enterprise Solutions Division, MTN Nigeria, said MTN is working hard to extend the service to many more cities and states before the end of the year for the benefit of SMEs and SOHOs across the country.
